SHEARLY GRODE
(American | New Orleans, 1925-2003)

A native of New Orleans, Shearly Grode studied art at the Rabouin Art School and the John McCrady School of Art. She was the first director of the Orleans Gallery and was a member until 1967. Grode and her husband, Robert Helmer, founded the Circle Gallery with Janet Kohlmeyer and later the Oak Sreet Gallery. She won many national honors and her works are included in the collections of New Orleans Museum of Art and The Historic New Orleans Collection. Like her contemporaries George Dunbar and Robert Helmer, Grode embraced the used of gold and silver leaf in her work. She also created highly textured surfaces with sculptural relief, uniting these artists’ work with a common aesthetic.
