KNUTE HELDNER
(American | New Orleans, 1886-1952)

Knute Heldner was one of the most accomplished Impressionist painters in New Orleans in the early 20th century.  His most impressive body of work are his views of the French Quarter, the area of the city where he lived and worked.  This rare scene of the Lower Pontalba Building and the corner of Jackson Square shows a horse drawn carriage and two figures crossing the square in front of St. Louis Cathedral.  The bright green foliage suggest it is springtime, and the soft light and reflections on the stone pavement intimate that it has just rained, providing a great sense of atmosphere to the painting.
